That song always reminds me of countless wedding celebrations I have been to.

We sure have our fair share of unforgettable experiences in weddings. It could be the first kissing scene that we’ve witnessed, the singles’ game, or even the meal time (who can forget, anyway? lol). However, if you’re like me, you would really have questions to the intricate details that come along in a wedding celebration.

I am often attracted to unveiling the mystery behind the rituals performed at a wedding party. In this blog, I’d like to share with you the essence of cutting of cake and toasting of the wine.

Importance of cutting of cake and toasting of the wine

Having worked in the event industry as a wedding emcee in Davao, I must admit I find it hard to give spiels for the two of the most significant symbols that would bring luck and blessings to any couple on their BIG day. With the help of a mentor, Papa Kiko, and some counterparts in the industry, I have finally found a way to shed light on this stuff. Here’s my takeaway.

Cutting of cake

The cutting cake symbolizes the very first meal shared by the newly wed; the wedding cake has been made with fine ingredients that resemble the longevity of their union and the sweetness of love that they have for each one.

The slicing of the cake also symbolizes the groom’s support for his wife, his responsibility to provide food on the table, and the promise of the bride to take care of him and their future family.

Furthermore, the cutting of cake speaks of the breaking of banquet of festivity that will be shared in this celebration. This is the reason why this part MUST NOT be skipped before meal time.

As a popular belief, they say that love can be quantified through sizes and so the bigger the slice, the bigger the love there is.

According to some wedding emcees, this is our way of finding out who is more in love with whom. Is it the bride to the groom? Or the groom to the bride?

Champagne toast

Any joyous social celebration would not be made even more special without a bottle of wine as this is the universal symbol of richness of life.

Traditionally, the bride and the groom take a CARAFE of wine, one red and one white, and each pour some into a single glass which they have to drink from.

This symbolic drinking from the cup of life reflects their sharing of all BITTER and SWEET experiences together as they journey in this realm that we call “married life”. Just like the wine, love should also be brewed over the years, and that we do hope and pray that they go sweeter as the years go by. As a Filipino advert goes, “Habang tumatagal, lalong sumasarap.“

This is also a gesture of wishing for a good health and prosperity throughout their married life, a toast of celebration, indeed! Cheers to the newly weds!
